Where flavor takes shape
Burrs are the heart of flavor. At Ceado, we design and manufacture each burr in-house, with focus on the desired aromatic coffee profile while ensuring perfect integration between grinder and burr.
Ceado Burrs Machinery is a unique place, entirely dedicated to burrs: here, the selection of the purest steels meets ultra-precise mechanical processing and specialized coatings that define performance and durability.
Every step is tracked and controlled to the micron, because we believe that the repeatability of flavor begins first and foremost with mechanical precision.
Behind each of our burrs lies not just technology, but the passion of those who dedicate themselves every day to crafting the very heart of flavor.
Steel bar cutting
It all starts with selected high-alloy steel bars. Each diameter corresponds to a burr type (50, 64, 83 mm). The bars are cut with precision into raw discs, ready for processing.
Base geometry and pre-carving
On robotic dual-spindle lathes, each disc is processed on both sides: mounting holes, perfectly parallel surfaces, and threading ensure flawless assembly. Production progress and efficiency statistics are tracked by our MES system; to monitor and maintain tolerances, we perform continuous checks both in-machine and with CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines).
Blades carving
The burrs take shape on custom-designed Ceado machines, unique in their kind. Synchronized four-axis cutting creates the toothed geometry in a single pass, ensuring precision and repeatability. It is this geometry that crucially defines the flavor profile in the cup. Burrs for our top-tier grinders are carved tooth-by-tooth for even greater control.
Hardening and levelling
To achieve optimal hardness, burrs are heat-treated at over 1000°C and cooled either in oil or via cryogenic treatment at -70°C. Each batch is tested for hardness and dimensional tolerances.
After hardening, the burrs are slightly deformed due to thermal shock. For this reason, they are levelled by a grindstone that restores flatness and parallelism between surfaces and reduces surface roughness.
Coatings and geometries
Ultrasonic washing, brushing, and—on high-end burrs—lapping bring the surfaces to micron-level flatness.
Special coatings (Opalglide, Red Speed, DLC, Titanium Nitrade) improve smoothness, reduce friction, and depending on the type, increase durability or enhance cup performance.
Burr alignment
Beyond the burr manufacturing stages, Ceado ensures perfect perpendicularity between the motor’s rotation axis and both upper and lower burrs.
Parallelism between the two burrs is essential for optimal grind quality.
To achieve this, three key factors are ensured:
- Perfect flatness of the grinding surfaces
- Parallel alignment of the burr pair
- Perpendicularity to the motor’s rotation axis
The base of the grinding chamber, which supports the lower burr, is precision-matched to the motor to guarantee perpendicularity.
The upper burr chamber is also seated on this levelled surface. This dual approach guarantees both perpendicularity and parallelism.
Thanks to this additional process, Ceado ensures that even after replacing with a new set of original Ceado burrs, performance remains identical: no changes in grind size distribution or timing.
This ensures that Ceado grinders maintain flavor consistency in the cup, even after a burr change.
